Anxiety Pills
In the world today, there is much stress and constant bad news reported in the news. It is no wonder that people are feeling the effects of all of this anxiety. Panic attacks and anxiety disorders are not something new but it does seem their incidences are on the rise. Luckily, several pharmaceutical companies have produced
anxiety pills to help people deal with these disorders.
Anxiety can arise for different reasons, some people have lower levels of serotonin in the brain which acts as a natural calming agent, other people suffer from
panic attacks in which the fight or flight response floods the body with epinephrine more commonly known as adrenaline. Your doctor will prescribe you
anxiety pills depending on the cause of your increased anxiety.
Serotonin Levels
People who have anxiety problems have been found to have low levels of serotonin. In order to correct, the balance a doctor may prescribe medications like BuSpar. This drug acts as a mild tranquilizer and has some distinct advantages over older
anxiety pills. Older forms of tranquilizers such as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan and Valium were known to have high levels of dependence and side effects. Some known side effects include:
- Drowsiness
- Confusion
- Depression
- Nausea
- Mania
- Hostility
- Hallucinations
BuSpar on the other hand has fewer side effects and less risk of dependency of all the available anxiety pills on the market. Another common drug used for
anxiety or panic attacks are beta-blockers.
Beta Blockers
Beta-blockers are not traditional anxiety pills, they are most commonly used for high blood pressure and heart problems, but doctors will often prescribe
the medication off label. One reason they can be effective is that they block the effects of norepinephrine, the stress hormone responsible for the fight or flight response to danger. These types of anxiety pills do not affect the emotional reasons for anxiety or panic attacks and are therefore more conducive to treating phobias such as performance anxieties.
Medication? No Medication?
When you are
dealing with panic attacks or anxiety it is a scary time and deciding whether or not to take medications can seem daunting. Anxiety pills can give you back a semblance of normality to your life; however, you do have to be concerned with possible addictions and side effects.
You will want to carefully weigh all your options before deciding whether to use anxiety pills. If you are someone, who only occasionally deals with an
anxiety attack you might not want to deal with the side effects of the medications. You could also pursue natural alternatives to anxiety pills. Learning breathing techniques, meditation, and focus can help you handle your anxiety and panic without the potential for dependency on drugs.
