The Psychological Cure for Panic Attacks

It is surprising how many people are prone to panic attacks. Perhaps it shouldn’t be when you stop to think, and realize, that panic attacks are what happen to some people when they are put into stressful and/or anxious situations. The fact of the matter is that today’s world is a very stressful place to inhabit.

Panic attacks are usually the culmination of prolonged exposure to anxiety and/or stress and are a manifestation of what that stress/anxiety causes to happen to the body. The good news is that there is a cure for panic attacks.

Panic attacks are the body’s reaction to the release of adrenalin. This adrenalin is released as an automatic reaction to certain events. Under normal circumstances, the job of the adrenalin is to prepare us for some form of physical action as a response to a particularly dangerous or threatening situation.

Given say a stressful circumstance, (but not necessarily physically threatening); the body is “fooled” into releasing this adrenalin rush. The cure for panic attacks is therefore geared towards the psychological cause and not the physical symptoms.

There are now two therapeutic methodologies that have been developed as an eventual cure for panic attacks. They both take a number of weeks before they will begin to be effective. If in the meantime, the symptoms that are being experienced are very severe, your doctor may agree to put you on a course of medication to supplement the therapeutic remedy.

Whilst the medication will help to relive the symptoms, it does nothing to address the root cause of the problem which is why the therapeutic route must be taken too.

The first therapeutic cure for panic attacks that we will consider is the number of new anxiety, stress, and depression centers that are now found all across the US. These centers offer therapeutic courses in the management of stress anxiety and depression disorders. They provide a forum where you can get together with fellow sufferers to discuss and compare experiences and notes. Panic attacks can make you feel very isolated. Because they are sparked by an emotional response to a situation, people are often embarrassed to admit or even recognize the disorder for what it is.

That is why it is such a good idea to be with other people who undergo the same fears and experiences that you do. It induces a great atmosphere for analyzing the causes which will in time lead to the application of successful methodologies for curing or preventing the onset of fresh attacks.

The second therapeutic cure for panic attacks is exposure therapy. This is where you are put into a safe environment and then encouraged to undergo panic attacks. This works on the theory that the more you experience symptoms that accompany a panic attack, the less frightening they will eventually feel. Whilst panic attacks may genuinely feel like heart attacks, they are not; nor are they life threatening. These repeated experiences, under safe, controlled, conditions will help the sufferer to realize that there is no actual threat.

Once this is fully understood, it creates a much more comfortable base from which to begin to learn new methodologies for calming the attacks, making you feel more in control of your destiny. This will then provide the confidence to be able to address the mental reactions to problem events, and to re-evaluate your priorities and values accordingly, thus minimizing or even dismissing the problems together.
