Panic Disorder Treatment
There are people who suffer from an occasional
panic attack and then there are those who have panic disorders. Basically, the main difference is in the number of times you have panic attacks. Most people will have at least one panic attack during their life; however, there are others who will go on to develop what is known as a panic disorder.
Panic disorder treatment is more involved for the person who is having multiple attacks. If you have experienced one or two attacks in your life, you probably will not want or need to be on medications. On the other hand, if you have one or more attacks per week you will want a more intensive
panic disorder treatment plan.
The only person who can really set up your
panic disorder treatment successfully is your family doctor. The reason for this is you may need the assistance of prescribed medication to deal with the attacks while you look for the underlying cause. It is always best to seek medical attention when you think you have a panic disorder anyway to rule out other possible medical problems.
Once you have seen your physician he or she will likely prescribe you medication to curb your panic attacks. This however should not be the only course of panic disorder treatment you pursue. You will also want to talk with a professional counselor about some of
the underlying issues that may be at the root of your panic attacks.
Negative attitudes or constant worry can be a prime suspect in
panic disorders. These are things that can be overcome through counseling. Other panic disorder treatments can include medication combined with coping skills.

- Learning to breathe deeply through your nose is a great way to get through a panic attack. Deep breathing focuses your mind on one thing and forces you to not think about the panic, it will also balance the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood stream.
- Counting quietly to yourself is another panic disorder treatment skill that many recommend. In the same way as breathing focuses, you mind, so does counting, plus gives you a feeling of being in control of something.
- You have probably heard people jokingly refer to going to their happy place. This is a good skill to have if you suffer from frequent panic attacks. Try to think of a calming serene place that will bring your heart rated down as the adrenaline dissipates.
- Keep telling yourself that the panic attack will pass and that you will be okay. There has never been a documented case of anyone dying from a panic attack even though every fiber of your being may scream the contrary. Repeat to yourself that you are okay and everything is fine until the anxiety fades.
These are just a few panic disorder treatment options you can explore. There are many more coping skills and even
medications you can take for severe attacks. The most important thing to remember is you will need help to deal with the anxiety and do not be afraid to seek it out.
