Social Anxiety Treatment
Some people are afraid to speak in public and others are simply afraid of public situations entirely. This is a form of social anxiety and falls under the banner of a panic or anxiety disorder. Social anxiety is a feeling of discomfort or unease during social situations. Many people may feel mildly uncomfortable around groups of people or at important events but in some cases, the mild discomfort becomes a major obsession where social events are avoided at all costs. This is considered a social phobia or disorder. To deal with this kind of phobia there are
social anxiety treatment options you can research.
What is social anxiety?
You might think that shyness or a fear of public speaking is normal but there are times when the anxiety can get so bad that it is nearly debilitating. Often times you find that social phobias go hand in hand with other disorders such as OCD and this makes the problem worse. Here are some signs to watch for if you think you may have a social
anxiety problem:
- Sweating and blushing
- Avoidance of social interaction
- Constantly looking for signs of disapproval from others
- A belief that people will judge you negatively
Often times these ideas and beliefs are created during childhood or adolescents and carry over into adult life. The difference between the natural level of fear or discomfort someone may feel in social situations and an
anxiety disorder is the intensity of the social anxiety and the behaviors that accompany it.
Treatment
A
social anxiety treatment can be much the same as the treatment you could expect for any panic or anxiety problem. Medications, therapy and coping skills are generally the answer for any level of anxiety you might experience. If you are only experiencing
panic symptoms in certain situations and these situations are rare you would do well with simple counseling or a few coping skills.
However if you have come to the place in life where you never want to leave home because you are afraid of what could happen then a combination of counseling and medication is the best approach. You will need to consult a medical professional to be sure which
social anxiety treatment is best for your specific situation.
Managing Social Anxiety
For milder cases, social anxiety treatment could be as simple as imagining everyone in a crowded room is wearing nothing more than their underwear! Tricks like this can help you overcome mild social anxiety and might even lead to you enjoying yourself.
For more intense phobias, you can role-play during therapy and practice new social skills that will
alleviate some of your anxiety. Once you have role played say a cocktail party a few times you will be less concerned about making a mistake and embarrassing yourself in front of people.
