A panic attack is a sudden incidence of intense fear that comes up for no reason. Though they may appear to come from nowhere it is believed that panic attack is the bodily response known as fight or flight. This evolutionary response floods the body with hormones such as adrenaline that prepare a person to either run or fight for their very life. When panic attacks strike it is an intensely terrifying time that may make you feel like you are losing your mind.

How to Deal with Panic

While you are working with your doctor on a treatment plan for anxiety it can be helpful to have some coping methods in place when panic attacks come upon you.

Your doctor will talk with you about all of your options and one he may suggest are medications, especially when panic attacks are very severe and debilitating. Some medications are good for immediate relief and others are more for maintenance. Tranquilizers are good for immediate relief of anxiety, while anti-depressants work over the long haul to alleviate symptoms.

Therapy

In addition to all of the above, your doctor will likely suggest therapy to address the underlying causes and triggers of panic attacks. When panic attacks begin, you may feel like they are coming from nowhere; however, research has shown there are many things that contribute to panic attacks.
